We\u2019ve been running tours in Melbourne since 2018 and in that time we\u2019ve tried out pretty much every hostel in the city<\/strong>. Yep, really.<\/em> So we feel we can claim our favourite hostels in Melbourne<\/strong>, for vibes, for views and for meeting other travellers. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Whether you\u2019re arriving after a long flight or overnight bus, your first impressions of a city ride high on your hostel. And Little Drifter<\/strong>\u00a0is ideal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s centrally located in the CBD (Central Business District) which means you\u2019re in the free tram zone<\/strong> (and what backpacker doesn\u2019t love free public transport?!). But it\u2019s tucked away just enough to guarantee a good night\u2019s sleep away from the hustle of the city centre. Essential with jet lag.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You have all the important stuff: big lockers, personal lights and plug sockets<\/strong>. Plus laundry just down the corridor.\u00a0 And it was only renovated in 2024 so everything still feels nice and new.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But it\u2019s the social space<\/strong> we love here. Large lounge \u2705 big kitchen \u2705 rooftop hang \u2705\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After you\u2019ve claimed your bunk, make sure you head up to the roof top<\/strong> – the view is fantastic over the city. \ud83c\udfd9\ufe0f<\/span><\/p>\n

The beach suburb of St Kilda<\/strong> is a rite of passage as a backpacker in Melbourne. Its main draw, is of course, the beach<\/strong>. Along with bars, hippie shops, restaurants and cafes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This is where you\u2019ll also find Luna Park<\/strong>, Melbourne\u2019s closest thing to a theme park \ud83c\udfa1 open every weekend.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

There\u2019s always something happening in St Kilda and Nomads<\/strong> is no exception. This is a party hostel<\/strong> so you can expect a great social scene, incredible events and lots of new mates. It\u2019s also home to the legendary Big Willy\u2019s Bingo<\/strong> \ud83d\udc40 – which has some pretty great prizes on offer, so make a beeline for the Red Eye Bar on a Monday.<\/span><\/p>

But that\u2019s not all, there are events all week from trivia nights to silent discos<\/strong>, so it couldn’t be easier to make new mates.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The facilities include everything you need, a decent kitchen, free pool tables in the bar and an on-site cafe<\/strong> \ud83e\udd24 for those times you don\u2019t want to cook.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Back in the city, Space Hotel<\/strong>, as the name suggests, isn’t your average hostel. It\u2019s the perfect balance between hostel and hotel and the facilities match.<\/span><\/p>

We have to start with the rooftop<\/strong> \ud83c\udfd9\ufe0f here because it is massive and that\u2019s not all, it also has its own hot tub<\/strong> – this is luxury backpacking without the hotel price tag. But the list goes on: you\u2019ll find a \ud83d\udcfd\ufe0f cinema room<\/strong>. There\u2019s even an on-site gym<\/strong>!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Plus, everything you\u2019d expect from a hostel, a great sized kitchen, laundry, chill out spaces and a study\/work space on the ground floor \u2705<\/span><\/p>

Elsewhere you have a dedicated work and study space<\/strong> – so you can live out your digital nomads dream – or start working on your resume. A good sized kitchen, a chill space and weekly social events. The most unique part? You\u2019ll find live music<\/strong> and a record shop<\/strong> in the basement.
